The drums and rhythms of Africa are a significant part of the African heritage. On this continent, whether we speak about djembes, talking drums, rattles, shekeres or thumb pianos, percussion speaks. It is alive in their communication, myths and rituals. Here Carousel Publications, Ltd. presents an array of these instruments which reflect the African passion for the drum.
The Djembe is a carved wood
drum from Africa, dating back 800 years. The tone on these drums is very
low and resonant. From Mali and Senegal.

African Gourd (Calabash) tambourine
from Burkina Faso, is handsomely decorated with carved designs in burgundy
and trimmed with leather. Around the outer rim of the gourd are cowrie

Agogo Bells from Ghana are
2 cone-shaped, clapperless iron bells formed on one handle. Very large
ones are sometimes used in court and ritual music. Comes with beater.

THUMB PIANOS, also called Mbira or Sansa, are melodic instruments consisting of small metal strips arranged on a flat sounding board. The resonators are either gourds or wood. The sound of the mbira is associated with the creation myth. It is also called "the walker's friend" because it is taken on long journeys through the forest.

Dugi Dugi from Kenya is a
little drum shaped like a lollipop. Played by twirling the stick between
the palms or fingers so that beads on strings alternately hit the heads.

Face Rattle is a humorous
looking gourd with a face carved in it, complete with white teeth and rattling

FACE RATTLE
Man Rattle This and the face
rattle show the ingenuity and humor of the people who made them. The head
and body are gourds (maracas) and the rattling arms are wood. The legs
serve as a handle for the instrument. From Kenya. [manr] $48.
