Drums and Hand Percussion from Around the World
Drums and Percussion from Nepal and Tibet
Carousel Publications, Ltd. presents the percussion of Nepal and Tibet. Although
we find a similarity to Indian instruments, the characteristic instruments of the
Himalayan region come under the influence of Tibetan Buddhist practice.
Mahdal is a two-headed cylindrical log
drum from Nepal. It is a traditional folk instrument made by the women
and used mainly for dancing. The dancers who play these drums while they
dance are called Mahdalay (men) and Maruni (women). Tuning rings

LARGE MAHDAL DRUM
Ocean Drum from Nepal is a slim, 2-sided
frame drum with pellets inside which simulate the roar of the sea. Beautifully
hand-painted -- designs may differ.

MEDIUM OCEAN DRUM
Ceremonial Damaru with
carry case. It is played by rotating the
fingers which hold the drum so that the beads on the strings hit both heads. The case is all hand-sewn and embroidered.

Medium 5" long and 4" wide [sdam] $60.
MEDIUM CEREMONIAL DAMARU
Shaman Drum (dhyangro) from Nepal; overall length approx. 25
inches. Traditional 3-sided carved handle. No two alike. [shaman] $280.
SHAMAN DRUM
Carved Damaru from Nepal is approx. 3.75" in diameter. This damaru is hand-carved wood and has a small bell. [damaruc] $22.
CARVED DAMARU
Folk Damaru from Nepal are wooden hand drums. Their leather lacings
have knotted straps which beat the two heads alternately when the
hand is twisted back and forth.. Pitch changes by squeezing the lacing.
The damaru is played by the Hindu god Shiva when he dances the world into
creation.
