World In Tune TM is an integrative curriculum with music as the core of the program, grades K-12, emphasizing rhythm, modes, listening and creating sounds. It comes complete with authentic instruments from around the world; a teacher's handbook and laminated time-line charts.
World In Tune TM integrates history, art, humanities, mathematics, theater, and dance with music as the core. Having music as the integrator requires no great leap of faith, for in the ancient civilizations of China, India, Egypt, Sumer/Babylon, and Greece, music did hold this position. Ancient peoples realized its two-fold aspect: 1. of sounding mathematics and 2. as art which touches the heart. This encompassing world view of music, before the common era, placed ancient man in a Musical Garden of Eden

Since the program is integrative, we address the student as a whole--his mind, emotions, senses and motor coordination. The way this is done in WIT is to "immerse the student in the experience". For instance, we read in a book that Pythagoras discovered musical intervals with his monochord. WIT takes this a step further and provides the student with the monochord. Finding the midpoint requires spatial and mathematical skills, placing his finger firmly requires motor skills, listening to the result, auditory skills. But for the student (who couldn't care less about this language of education and skills), his response is one of discovery. Eureka! discovery gives new incentive to his interest and we carry this forward in song, dance and theatre. For an explanation of finding the intervals on the monochord click here
The Materials in World In Tune TM The program includes laminated charts for bulletin boards covering each civilization. Along with a musical time-line of culture and historical events, these charts picture the instruments which were in use during a particular epoch. The teacher's handbook is a wellspring of ideas and projects to present to students, with permission to copy pertinent pages for classroom use.
Below is an excerpt from the section on Indian rhythm. The first, third and fourth beats are audible, while the second is silent. There are three ideas in this example: 1.Cyclic rhythm, 2. A rest is a measurement in time (silence moving in a measured rate), and 3. The last beat shows the completion of a cycle and is expressed by a clap.

How to Use World In Tune TM
This integrative curriculum is presented to fit into your music program. Whether you choose to present it as
one complete program, or as a 15 or 20 minute time unit, or as part of the curriculum you
are now using is up to you. WIT provides the basic framework for the important
ideas which have influenced our culture today. It is this framework which gives the
program its flexibility.
The Musical Ideas Emphasized in This Series
The main emphasis of the series is on listening, rhythm, modes and creating sound. We hope
that other teachers in your school add their expertise to this study. But if you do not
receive assistance from the Humanities, Art, or Social Studies departments of your school,
we've included enough material from the other disciplines to fill this gap.
For Elementary, Middle, and High School
The sets contain materials which can be used for all grades. The way this works is
that World In Tune expresses certain basic
cultural, as well as musical ideas. The important point is for students to
understand the idea; however, the explanation can be geared to the grade which
you are teaching. Examples of this are given in the text.
World In Tune (tm) (integrative curriculum) is a hands-on approach, the instruments are meant to be played by the students. Suggestions are given for how to care for them and how to play them. All the instruments are hand-made in various parts of the world and have been included because of their remarkable resemblance to their ancient musical counterparts.
