Here are lovely musical instruments that children can enjoy. These are beautiful guiros, rasps and drums: real percussion instruments that make welcome gifts. Every child can create music and have fun at the same time because these are real instruments, with authentic musical sounds. The appeal to the child is not only through the sound, it is also visual and tactile -- the animal shapes are beautifully hand carved and finished. The guiros (rasps) on this page are played by rubbing their ridges with a stick, but they are also resonant tone blocks -- try tapping them to discover all their tonal possibilities. Instruments on this page are mostly from India and Southeast Asia.

Frog Peeper in a Pouch , beautifully hand-carved in
Vietnam. He is 2 inches long and comes with a stick -- rub it along his back to make him sing. Pouch is suede.
The Tortoise and The Hare-- this famous duo is hand-carved in Vietnam. Storytellers can use them for sound
effects, and children will enjoy them for their beauty as well as their sound. Try rubbing the back of the tortoise
with the thick end of the stick, and the little ridges on the rabbit's head with the thin end. Or try tapping them
in different places. Tortoise is 4 inches long, so is Hare. They come together in a lovely wooden gift box (5"x8"x3")
with an inlaid design.

Mama Frog and Little Peeper, an adorable pair of frog rasps, they come together
in their own wooden treasure box.
Clay Turtle Ocarina , hand-crafted in Mexico. Colorful glazed backs; designs vary. Five finger-holes,
lovely deep tones.
Spinning Drum or Karate Kid Drum from LP. Lollipop-shaped drum is 8.5" long with 2.5" diameter head.

Monkey Drum is a small hourglass drum. The knotted cords hit the heads when the drum is shaken back and forth with
